	The Project STAR Parent Education Program Supportive Training to Assist Parent – Child Relationships Mission Statement: To instill and nurture in parents the belief that they are their child’s first and most influential teachers. Project STAR is a parent education program dedicated to the enrichment of the parent – child relationship. It is based on the concepts that experience in a child’s early years are critical to future success in school and life, and that parents are their child’s first and most influential teachers. The program serves families with children ages 0 through age 3 and has a prenatal segment as well. Participation in Project STAR is voluntary and free of charge. The program serves families in Staunton, Waynesboro and Augusta County. The curriculum utilized is based on the Born To Learn model established in 1981 through Parents As Teachers, an internationally recognized pioneer in parent education, research and program implementation. The Parents as Teachers curriculum is currently utilized in over 2,200 programs both nationally and internationally. The major components of the Project STAR program include personal visits, periodic developmental screenings, group meetings and resource networking. Through personal visits, the parent educator provides information pertinent to the child’s physical, emotional and cognitive development. Developmental screenings are utilized in order to facilitate early intervention. Parent Educators work closely with other agencies with whom a family may be involved as well as agencies which may be utilized in order to facilitate development in specialized areas beyond the scope of Project STAR.
