Project Star
Project STAR (Supportive Training to Assist Parent-Child Relationships) is a grant-funded Parent Education program serving families in Staunton, Waynesboro and Augusta County. Participation is voluntary and free of charge to families with children birth through age 3. In addition, there is a prenatal segment, offering support to new mothers.
Using the internationally-recognized “Parents as Teachers” (PAT) curriculum, the primary goal is to instill in parents the belief that they are their child’s first and most influential teachers. Currently, the Family Resource and Referral Center has two certified Project STAR Parent Educators – Linda Mohler and Theresa Jones.
The major components of the Project STAR program include personal visits, periodic developmental screenings, group meetings and resource networking. Through personal visits, the Parent Educator provides information pertinent to the child’s physical, emotional and cognitive development.
Developmental screenings are utilized in order to facilitate early intervention. Parent Educators work closely with other agencies with whom a family may already be involved in addition to making referrals when necessary. The supervised visitation program is also a part of Project STAR. For a brochure on supervised visits, please click here.
